PREMIUMBUILDS Best Motherboards for Ryzen 9 3900X BuildsJuly 12, 2019 by PremiumBuilds 2 Comments
Ryzen 3000 processors, including the Ryzen 9 3900X, are starting to be widely available from retailers across the country, and PC builders can finally begin to build their highly anticipated Zen 2 builds. The Ryzen 9 3900X is poised to be their high-end, enthusiast grade offering, showing on paper very impressive performance and benchmarks, and is rivalled and set to compete against Intel’s Core i9-9900K and i9-9900KS processor for 2019.
For those looking to build with the Ryzen 9 3900X, it is important to get the absolute most performance out of this Zen 2, 7nm processor – you are going to want to pair it with a capable CPU cooler for improving thermal performance, an X570 motherboard with decent VRM quality and features, optimised RAM for Ryzen (B-die), a decent power supply and topped off with a PC case with good airflow, and I suppose looks great too!
In this particular guide, we are going to overview the best motherboards for Ryzen 9 3900X builds, covering a wide range of different options such as mini-ITX and micro-ATX motherboards for the 3900X, the best motherboards for overclocking the 3900X (despite little headroom for OC’ing – more on that later) as well as budget options.
If you’re doing a Ryzen 9 3900X, we assume you will be wanting to do a high-end, enthusiast level build and thus utilise the new PCIe 4.0 standard and take advantage of the new PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs that offer mind-bending speeds of up to 5Gb/s. Therefore, apart from our budget section where we will include a B450 motherboard, we will be picking motherboards with the new X570 chipset for AMD Ryzen Zen 2 and the Ryzen 9 3900X.

Best Flagship Motherboard for Ryzen 9 3900XLooking at all the flagship X570 motherboards announced so far, the only motherboard that, right now, stands head and shoulders above the rest – the Gigabyte X570 AORUS Xtreme. This motherboard is not only one of the best looking X570 motherboards on the market, but also has one of the most overkill VRM with a solid heatsink, featuring a true 14-phase design which is a first for any motherboard, period, as well as 70A smart power stages. Unlike the other flagship X570 motherboards, the AORUS Xtreme doesn’t feature one of those marmite active chipset cooling fans, which many PC builders aren’t a fan of.
If you plan on extreme overclocking the Ryzen 9 3900X, then thankfully there are two 8-pin power connectors, but if you don’t plan on doing so then you only need one or to use the 8-pin and 4-pin connector.
Feature-wise, this motherboard has everything you would expect from a flagship X570 motherboard for the Ryzen 9 3900X, such as 10 GbE LAN, WiFi 6 and internal and external clear CMOS buttons, as well as a Dual BIOS and socketed BIOS chips.
Priced at just under $700, the Gigabyte X570 AORUS Xtreme is hands down the best flagship and enthusiast X570 motherboard on the market, and if you are building a money-is-no-object build, then pair the Ryzen 9 3900X with this fantastic motherboard.

Best Overall Motherboard for Ryzen 9 3900XIf you want the absolute best X570 motherboard for your Ryzen 9 3900X build but don’t want to spend flagship motherboard prices (e.g. ASRock X570 AQUA priced at $1000), then you will be wanting to look at one of the mid-range, performance orientated X570 motherboards – such as the ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero, MSI Meg Ace, Gigabyte X570 AORUS Master and the ASRock X570 Taichi. The youtuber ‘Buildzoid’ recently did a video on the X570 flagship motherboards and said that all of them are pretty much equivalent in specifications and VRM quality (overkill basically) on paper – and whatever one you pick you really can’t go wrong.
With that said, if we were to pick between the flagship X570 motherboards, we would personally go for the ASUS Crosshair VIII Hero WiFi since it has by far (in our eyes) the most convenient BIOS for tweaking the 3900X.
The Crosshair VIII Hero is a great looking motherboard no-doubt, with a mammoth VRM heatsink and active cooling chipset heatsink, featuring dual M.2. with the PCIe 4.0 standard, as well as 3 full-length PCIe 4.0 slots. Storage is plentiful, with 8 SATA ports, dual M.2. with its own heatsink and cooling zone, as well as 4 DIMM slots for up to 128GB of RAM. This X570 motherboard utilises the latest WiFi 6 and 2.5 GbE internet. Featuring a 14-phase design with 60A IR3555 components, the VRM on the Crosshair VIII Hero has been shown to be extremely impressive, and only succeeded by the Crosshair VIII Formula which retails for just under $700.

Best Budget Motherboard for Ryzen 9 3900XIf you’re looking to do a budget Ryzen 9 3900X build, then we assume you won’t be wanting to spend serious money on the new PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs that the new Ryzen 9 3900X and X570 motherboards can support. Thus, we recommend for budget Ryzen 9 3900X builds to opt for a B450 chipset motherboard, which offers fantastic value for their features, performance and VRM quality.
The absolute best B450 motherboard we recommend for the Ryzen 9 3900X is the MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC – a jack-of-all-trades motherboard that will easily handle the performance and power requirements of the Ryzen 9 3900X. Covered in more detail in our B450 motherboard guide for Ryzen 3000, the B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC has arguably the best VRM quality seen in any B450 motherboard, as well as an extensive and impressive feature set for its competitive price.

Best Micro ATX Motherboard for the Ryzen 9 3900XRight now there is only one announced X570 micro ATX motherboard announced for the Ryzen 9 3900X – the ASRock X570M Pro4. This is a 10 phase design mATX motherboard featured 8 SATA, dual PCIe 4.0 M.2. slots, as well as dual USB 3.1 Gen 2, including Type C I/O ports. This is the only motherboard that will support the Ryzen 9 3900X out of the box, but if you’re willing to do a BIOS update and not utilise the latest PCIe 4.0, we recommend going for the fantastically-reviewed MSI B450M Mortar – which is regarded as the best micro ATX B450 motherboard on the market in 2019.

Best Mini ITX Motherboard for Ryzen 9 3900X BuildsWith only three mini-ITX motherboards announced for the X570 chipset, with two only really being available to purchase today – the mini-ITX motherboard we like the look of the most is the Gigabyte X570-I AORUS Pro WiFi – with on paper decent 6-phase VRM with 70A power stages (TDA21472) and plenty of features and connectivity. The X570-I AORUS Pro WiFi has been regarded to have a superior VRM quality than the ASRock Phantom ITX and ASUS ROG Strix X570-I Gaming ITX – and based on this alone we recommend the Gigabyte since VRM performance is critical in an SFF system.
